Cash or Crash is a unique and wonderfully entertaining online live game show that was launched by Evolution Gaming in September 2021. Evolution is famous for bringing us many of the most popular Live Casino games around, with previous hit releases including Dream Catcher, Side Bet City, and Crazy Time. Cash or Crash is a different animal altogether, and it's no exaggeration to say that there isn't anything else quite like it.

Cash or Crash: The Format

Like many other Evolution titles, Cash or Crash is a live game that is broadcast from a purpose-built studio. Here the studio has been designed to look like the interior of a blimp, which is an airship that can carry passengers high into the air thanks to an elongated balloon (or envelope) that is filled with a lifting gas such as Helium.

The studio represents the passenger compartment of the airship, and so you'll notice that the game presenter is properly attired as a steward or stewardess. Through the large airship windows, you'll have a fantastic view of a gorgeously rendered world outside. The airship will begin at ground level, but that will quickly change as the game proceeds, as we'll explain shortly.

In the middle of the passenger compartment stands a podium, on top of which is a semi-transparent sphere. This is the machine at the heart of the game. The podium serves as a paytable ladder that has 20 steps, and the sphere contains 28 coloured balls. At the bottom of your screen, you'll see a betting interface that allows you to select your stakes and place your bets.

Cash or Crash: How to Play

Having explained how Cash or Crash is presented visually, we can now turn to the rules of the game itself. The sphere on the podium contains a total of 28 coloured balls, broken down as follows:

  • 19 green balls
  • 8 red balls
  • 1 golden ball

  • The basic idea is that you need to place a bet before the airship ride gets underway, and you do so via the interface at the foot of the screen. When you've done that, the sphere will select one of the coloured balls that it contains, much like an old-fashioned bingo machine would select the next winning number.

What you want to see is a green ball being selected because this will lift the airship, and you'll progress one step up the 20-step paytable. At this point, you can choose to take one of three actions: Take All, Take Half or Continue.

  • Take All means that you take all of your winnings and pull out of the current game round with your profit intact.
  • Take Half means that you take half of your winnings out of the game but continue playing with the remaining half.
  • Continue means that you don't take anything out of the game, but you literally 'let it ride' on the next ball to be drawn.

  • Should a red ball be drawn instead of a green one, the airship will crash, and the game will end. When this happens, you will lose any money that you had left in the game. Of course, any money that you had previously taken out will be safe in your account.

The aim of the game is for you to ride the airship as high as you can without it crashing.

    The Golden Ball

When the single golden ball is selected by the sphere, the game enters a bonus mode. The golden ball acts like an 'extra life,' and so it protects all players from crashing. For that reason, the game continues, but you won't have to make any decisions after a green ball is drawn. What you want to see here are plenty more green balls taking you higher and higher. If a red ball is drawn, the golden ball extra life is lost, and the game continues without its protection.

Should you ride the airship all the way to the top of the 20-step paytable ladder with the golden ball intact, you will win the top prize of 50,000 times your stake. If you ride the airship to the top of the paytable ladder without the golden ball, you will win 18,000 times your stake.

    Cash or Crash: Strategy

While Cash or Crash is a game of luck, it can be played strategically. That's because the chances of getting a green or red ball change as the game unfolds. Fortunately, those nice people at Evolution have designed Cash or Crash with strategic players in mind, and so they provide two informative airship symbols to the left and right of the podium. Each of these symbols contains a percentage figure that tells you the chances of a green or red ball being drawn next. They are useful because they can help you to make more informed decisions about whether to Take All, Take Half or Continue.

According to Evolution, playing Cash or Crash with an 'optimal strategy' would give you a Return to Player figure of 99.59%. The good news for anyone who doesn't even want to think about playing strategically is that you'll have a chance to cash out with a profit around 71% of the time as a matter of course. That's an average figure, but it comes straight from the developers, so it's a reliable one.

Our advice as far as strategy is concerned is to decide at the outset if you're more interested in making smaller profits or bigger ones. If you want a low-risk approach, cash out after the first green ball. Medium-risk players can Take Half after every green ball in the hope of covering their stake, at which point they can continue without risk. And if you're into high-risk, just hop on board and let it ride until you reach your desired profit level or you crash out.

    Cash or Crash: Conclusion

Cash or Crash is a unique live game show title that is as entertaining as it is simple to play. The visuals are fantastic, and the scope for experimenting with different strategies means that you won't get bored no matter how often you play.
