Over the last few years, online casino games using a vertically oriented wheel (think Dream Catcher or Crazy Time from Evolution Gaming) have become almost as popular as Roulette, which uses a horizontally oriented wheel. It seems that we can't get enough of wheel-based games, especially in a Live Casino setting. And perhaps that's why, in November 2020, Pragmatic Play released Mega Wheel as its own contribution to the vertical genre.

Mega Wheel: The Format

Mega Wheel was designed for Live Casinos and specifically for fans of the Game Show format. Like the other vertical wheel games already mentioned, the action takes place in a purpose-built studio and is professionally hosted. In this case, it's hosted by a member of the Pragmatic Play presentation team.

The studio has a curved red background with a large arch structure that frames the Mega Wheel itself. This wheel has 54 segments in 9 different colours, and each colour is associated with a particular number. Each number pays its own value for every $1 bet. A winning bet on number 5 would therefore pay 5 times your bet.

To the left of the arch is a Mega Wheel board which will display a Mega Lucky Number in each round, and we will talk more about that later.

A betting panel at the foot of the screen allows you to place bets on the outcome of each Mega Wheel spin. You will see the 9 coloured numbers, which increase in value from left to right and a couple of bet controls on the far right. At the very bottom of the screen, you will see a results row. This allows you to see the last thirty or so numbers that have come up, with the most recent result always appearing on the far left.

Mega Wheel: How to Play

The aim of Mega Wheel is for you to predict the colour of the segment that will be selected on the next spin. To place a bet, simply point your mouse cursor (or use your finger, if playing on tablet or mobile) to put chips of the required sum on any of the numbers you want to bet on.

We have said that there are nine numbers on the wheel, each with a different colour. However, those numbers aren't equally distributed. The actual distribution is as follows:

  • 1 (cream coloured) has 20 slots on the wheel and pays 1x your bet
  • 2 (yellow) has 13 slots on the wheel and pays 2x your bet
  • 5 (blue) has 7 slots on the wheel and pays 5x your bet
  • 8 (purple) has 4 slots on the wheel and pays 8x your bet
  • 10 (red-orange) has 4 slots on the wheel and pays 10x your bet
  • 15 (orange) has 2 slots on the wheel and pays 15x your bet
  • 20 (green) has 2 slots on the wheel and pays 20x your bet
  • 30 (deep purple) has 1 slot on the wheel and pays 30x your bet
  • 40 (pink) has 1 slot on the wheel and pays 40x your bet

You can bet on several numbers simultaneously but bet quickly because you won't have much time before the next spin takes place.

When the spin begins, one number on the wheel will be randomly selected as the Mega Lucky Number. This will then be displayed on the Mega Wheel board to the left of the arch, along with a random multiplier value that could be worth as much as 500x.

Note: The maximum value of the multiplier varies from number to number. Only the numbers 15, 20, 30, and 40 can have a multiplier of 500x. The maximum for 5, 8, and 10 is 250x, while the numbers 1 and 2 have maximum multipliers of 100x and 200x, respectively.

At the top of the Mega Wheel is an arrow pointing down. The segment of the wheel indicated by the arrow when the wheel comes to rest is the winning segment for that spin. If you have bet on the number shown, it will win at the appropriate odds. If you have bet on a winning number that just happens to have been selected as the Mega Lucky Number, your prize will be enhanced by the multiplier shown on the Mega Wheel board.

When the winning number has been called, another betting round begins in preparation for the next spin. We have said that you need to be quick when placing bets, and the good news is that there is a rebet button at the bottom right of the screen to help you. Click the button, and the game will automatically apply the same bets that you had on the previous spin to the next one.

Mega Wheel: Strategies

As you have probably gathered by now, Mega Wheel is a game of chance. The advertised Return to Player (RTP) is 96.5%, so it's about the same as playing a slot, but quite a bit more fun if you're a fan of the Game Show format.

Given that this is a game of chance, no strategy can change the edge that the house has over you. However, you can increase your chances of winning on any given spin by betting on multiple numbers.

The Lucky Seven

One strategy that we've seen being used is to bet on all numbers except 1 and 2. This will give you 21 chances of winning from the 54 segments of the wheel, which is 38.8%. You'll also be in with a shot at hitting a big multiplier, as you'll be covering the biggest numbers.

If you take this approach, a stake of $1 on each number will cost you $7. You could therefore win with the number 5 and still lose money. However, you'd only lose $2, and any multiplier would give you a profit. Of course, if the number 1 or 2 comes up, you'd lose all of your bets.

The Cover All

Another approach is to cover all nine of the available numbers so that you win with every spin. You'll still make losses due to the regular payouts on the numbers 1, 2, and 5 being insufficient to cover the $9 outlay. However, you'll never miss out on any multiplier, so when a big one comes along, you're sure to be on it!
