That was a game based on the music and aesthetics of Candlemass, a doom metal band from Sweden. Now the company has released a sequel to that game called House of Doom 2: The Crypt. The Format

This slot has five reels and three rows. It is set against a backdrop showing the entrance to a gothic-looking crypt. Two stone guardians flank the reels, and the game interface appears at the foot of the screen, framed in wrought iron.

Symbols on the reels include blood-red versions of the playing card ranks of 10, J, Q, K and A, as well as four ritual relic symbols. These are: a set of ritual knives, a Nightshade plan, candles and a skull with metal spikes protruding from the cranium. A Crypt logo serves as a scatter, and there are four different wilds. There is also a Spirit Gate symbol in play which can appear on any of the five reels.

When a wild symbol lands in a Spirit Gate, it will expand to completely fill the reel. The wild will then be held in place as one re-spin is given.

The Four Wilds

The four wild symbols in this game portray the Fire Mistress, the Metal Priestess, the Queen of the Damned and the Spirit of Unity. Each of these characters has a special power that can enhance your ability to win, as follows:

• Fire Mistress will award a multiplier of x2, x3, x5 or x10.
• Metal Priestess will convert all ritual relic symbols into the skull symbol.
• Queen of the Damned appearing in a Spirit Gate will add a Spirit Gate to all reels.
• Spirit of Unity delivers all of the powers of the other three characters at once.

Each of these wilds governs a different Zone in the game, and the Spirit of Unity can only appear during a special feature called Crypt Spins.

Free Spins Feature

Land three scatter symbols, and a Free Spins feature will be triggered. The special power of whatever spirit governed the zone which triggered this feature will be active here. In addition, at least one Spirit Gate will appear on every spin. When this Free Spins round is over, a new spirit wild will become active in the main game.

Crypt Spins

When a scatter symbol lands inside a Spirit Gate, it is upgraded into a flaming scatter. Those flaming scatters can trigger a feature called Crypt Spins. Here you'll get eight free spins with the Spirit of Unity in play. At least one Spirit Gate will appear on each spin, and if the Spirit of Unity lands in one, you will get a free respin with all of her combined powers at the ready to help you.

A Crypt of Temporary Confusion

At first glance, this game is a bit confusing because you can lose track of which spirit is active in the base game and what that will mean for any Free Spins or Crypt Spins that you happen to trigger.

Fortunately, this confusion is only temporary. When you have been playing for a while, you'll come to appreciate the rather disorienting game as a deliberate ploy to lure you into its strange and creepy atmosphere. In short, don't panic if you feel a bit lost when you first start playing.

More Than a Gimmick

'Some slots based around bands have no effort put into gameplay,' said Martin Zettergen, who is CPO at Play'n GO. 'They're relying on the fanbase to play the game purely because they recognize the faces.'

But this isn't the best way to do things, as he went on to explain.

'You need to make sure that it would still be a game that players would enjoy if you stripped away the slot's band theme. That way, it keeps players entertained and appeals to people that might not necessarily be fans of the music. It's about giving MORE than just a gimmick.'
