This New Slot Has Features Galore

Monarchies aren’t quite as popular today as they were a few hundred years ago, but the royal families which continue to reign in the 21st century still have their fans. You may not particularly consider yourself to be one of those fans right now, but a new game from Yggdrasil Gaming is sure to help you discover your inner royalist in no time at all, and that’s because The Royal Family has more great features than real royals have skeletons in their closets.

A Return to Nobler Times

The Royal Family doesn’t take place in the modern world, so there are no tabloid headlines or paparazzi photographers to worry about. Instead, this title takes us back to nobler times, when royal families were lovably eccentric, and their castles stood proudly at the centre of their respective kingdoms. The five reels and four rows of this slot are rather regally decorated, and you will see the castle in the background as you play.

This game has 25 pay lines, and a humorous Disney-esque feel to it. The main symbols on the reels include the royal suits of diamonds, spades, clubs and hearts, and four members of the family itself – the Prince, Queen, King and Knight, which are associated with the J, Q, K and A ranks, accordingly. A court jester symbol serves as a wild, and a gold cup symbol draped in a Free Spins sash serves as a scatter. A Royal Chest symbol can also appear on the fifth reel.

In addition to the main symbols just mentioned, The Royal Family has twelve Feature Prize symbols - seven ‘Common Feature Prizes’ which can appear on any reel and five ‘Rare Feature Prizes’, each of which is specific to a particular reel. These will be discussed in the Feature Prizes section which follows shortly.
The designers have done a fantastic job with this game. All of the symbols are very well illustrated, with the lower-value ones having a bold, colourful appearance and each of the characters looking as if they would be right at home in a big-screen animated movie. As far as audio is concerned, that too is impressive, with a gentle regal melody playing throughout and audio effects stylishly highlighting every win, wild win and special feature.

Feature Prizes Explained

The Feature Prize symbols are collected in the main game so that you can benefit from them in the Free Spins feature. The Common Feature Prize symbols which appear on all reels are: red pennants, which can give add one, two or three starting wilds to your tally; blue pennants, which can add one, two or three free spins; and a purple pennant, which will remove one lower-value symbol from the reels.

The Rare Feature Prize symbols, as mentioned earlier, are specific to particular reels, as follows:

  • Reel 1 can give you 2 extra free spins, a x2 multiplier or 2 starting wild symbols
  • Reel 2 can give you a x4 multiplier
  • Reel 3 can give you 2 starting wild reels
  • Reel 4 can give you 6 start wild symbols
  • Reel 5 can give you 9 additional free spins

You will see two empty pennant-shaped slots below each reel, and these are used to ‘store’ the Feature Prizes as you collect them. Should you fill both slots of any given reel, you will automatically trigger the Free Spins feature and be awarded at least eight free spins, and the Feature Prizes will be active throughout the Free Spins round.

Royal Chest Feature

When you get a royal chest symbol on the fifth reel you will be presented with a selection of five golden playing cards, each of which will show a different prize. In the main game, those prizes can include:

  • A stated cash prize of at least 100 and as much as 2500 coins
  • A stated Free Spins prize of 8, 16 or 24 free spins

You will be shown the prizes on the cards, and then they will be turned over, shuffled and spread out so that you can pick one of them. The card you pick will be turned over again and you will win the prize shown.

Free Spins Feature

When you get three or more scatter symbols on the reels at the same time you will trigger the Free Spins feature. This will give you 8, 16 or 24 free spins for 3, 4 or 5 scatters, respectively, and any Feature Prizes that you have collected will come into play here.

During this part of the game, any character symbol which appears could be transformed into a wild. Each symbol will spin, and if it rests as a wild symbol, that wild will stick for the remainder of the round.

The Royal Chest feature is also active in Free Spins, as it is in the main game, but here the prizes shown on the playing cards will be slightly different, namely:

  • A stated Free Spins prize of 2, 3 or 4 extra free spins
  • A stated Sticky Wilds prize of 1, 2 or 3 extra sticky wilds
